Nurturing Indigenous Culture, Heritage & Expression

A Traditional Cultural Centre that braids together Indigenous arts, culture, and heritage. Situated beside a creek, Echen Hall provides an ideal natural setting that connects to the cultural themes woven throughout this project.
NICHE braids together arts, culture, and heritage in a way that is both tangible and enduring. The painting events bring artistic creation and cultural transmission together through Elder-guided community gatherings. The NICHE Heritage Archives provide physical infrastructure to safeguard cultural materials, including language resources, for generations. The permanent display of heritage paintings transforms Echen Hall into a space where Indigenous identity, knowledge, and expression are visible, celebrated, and preserved.
NICHE is designed for lasting community engagement. The Heritage Archives will remain open and accessible, the heritage paintings will be a permanent feature of Echen Hall, and the NICHE website will provide an ongoing digital presence. This infrastructure ensures that community engagement continues for generations.
Our approach to community engagement is not a one-time consultation exercise but an ongoing, embedded practice that has shaped every program it delivers. The need, scope, and concept for NICHE have emerged directly from years of working alongside the local Indigenous community in Quesnel and listening to what the community identifies as its priorities.
